Top 20 Albums of 2022

Well, better late than never, right? I had planned to post my favorite albums of 2022 about a week ago, a little before Christmas in fact, but the busyness of the holiday season kept me busy. So, I will be posting my top albums of the past year today, I will try to post my top EP's of 2022 tomorrow, and hopefully post my favorite songs of 2022 in the next few days as well. I listened to 284 albums this year, and have narrowed it down to these 20 as my favorites.

the fairy tale story would be to say that music brought his parents together. the more accurate one was that his mother was a groupie that spend her days and nights following bands, and his dad wasn't that good at safe sex.

his mother wasn't ready to give up her lifestyle for motherhood, and only a couple of days after he was born, she had left him with his father. although he was born in los angeles, it was aspen creek that would be his home.

matteo had a very happy and healthy childhood. he was an active kid that enjoyed exploring the world around him and always had plenty of friends to call his. he enjoyed sports and comic books, but most of all he loved music.

his summers were spent on the road, and he loved it. his favorite thing to do as a little boy was to watch his dad perform. there are even some videos of a twelve-year-old matteo joining his dad on stage to play one of his songs.

a bit of a music prodigy, he learned to play a number of instruments when he was still very young, some self-taught. he knew, even then, that music was what he would be doing in the future.

high school was actually an easy time for him. matteo got good grades, played varsity sports, had an active social life, and even fell in love for the first time. so, when it came to an end, he was ready to move on.

matteo considered college, but he knew in his heat that that wasn't the right path for him. he chose to focus solely on music. but whereas his dad found his success in front of the audiences, matteo chose a more behind the scenes path.

a talented songwriter, he has had quite a few of his songs become hits while sang by other singers. he has also toured with his dad as part of his band, and produced tracks for different artists too.

he leads a very chill life. you can easily find him browsing through vinyls at feel good records, buying new comics at the comic cave, walking his dog at the park or playing ball at the sunnyvale basketball court.

20 anni fa

Esattamente 20 anni fa , era aprile anche allora, ero stato in questa uggiossima città tra Galles ed Inghilterra.

Allora l economia tirava il PIL cresceva, l Europa univa, jef besos mendicava, il mondo era felice, io almeno ero felice.

Le aziende prese dall' euro entusiasmo si fondevano.

E tutto tronfio mi sono fatto Virgilio coi colleghi, conosco il posto, so tutto io.ci penso io. Sperando che il mondo avesse congelato tutto in attesa del mio ritorno.

Quindi con la squadra ci siamo piazzati nello stesso hotel dove avevo soggiornato allora, era carino e di fronte c'era questo centro commerciale con un sacco di posti per mangiare.

Capisco la brexit, il COVID, le guerre ,leman Brothers, i sub prime.

Ma come stracazzo abbiamo fatto a sfasciare tutto in 20 anni?

Che in Italia vada tutto a rotoli lo diamo per scontato , ma scoprire che il mondo intero vada a ramengo è di una delusione sconfortante.

L hotel si è trasformato in peggio, metà sono monolocali con bagno e cucina (sporca). L altra metà è in stile indiano, e secondo me è una versione evoluta dei nostri centri massaggi cinesi.

Il centro commerciale avrà 8 negozi aperti su 60. Tutto in preda all incuria, ci sono molti senza tetto.

Nel frattempo nei classici capannoncini rossi all inglese sono sorte altre attività un pub, un centro di ritiro per auto vendute on line, un negozio di cinesi , uguale ai nostri e un parco di gonfiabili per bambini.

C è un po' di vita, anche se gli inglesi hanno sempre un aria molto trasandata.

La riaprite? Era tutto più bello quando c'era lavoro alla fabbrica, piu soldi, meno sporco.

Rifletto se dirle la verità e cioè che siamo venuti a controllare che non ci fosse niente di valore da lasciare, poi la venderanno ad un fondo, che come tutti i fondi di investimento, licenzierà tutti, svenderà tutto e farà qualche speculazione immobiliare.

evidentemente ci sono molti modi di conquistare una città e di conservarne il dominio. Per esempio, quando questo film era ancora in fase di progetto non avevo idea che la città di Casablanca appartenesse esclusivamente alla Warner Brothers. E invece, solo pochi giorni dopo aver pubblicato il nostro annuncio, riceviamo la vostra lunga, ominosa missiva che ci intima di non usare il nome Casablanca. Sembra che nel 1471 Ferdinando Balboa Warner, il vostro bis-bis-bisavolo, mentre cercava una scorciatoia per la città di Burbank capitasse per caso sulle coste dell'Africa e, levando in aria il suo Alpenstock (barattato poi con un centinaio di acri di terra), battezzasse quel luogo Casablanca. Non riesco proprio a capire il vostro comportamento. Anche se intendete rispolverare il vostro film, sono sicuro che col tempo lo spettatore medio imparerà a distinguere Ingrid Bergman da Harpo. Io non so se ci riuscirei, ma di sicuro mi piacerebbe provarci. Voi sostenete di essere i proprietari di Casablanca e vietate a chiunque di usare questo nome senza il vostro permesso. “Ma come la mettiamo con Warner Brothers”? E' vostro anche questo? E' perfino possibile che la famiglia Burbank vada più orgogliosa della patata prodotta dal vecchio che non dei vostri "Casablanca" o magari "Gold Diggers of 1931". A quanto pare mi è venuta fuori una bella filippica, ma vi assicuro che non ne avevo l'intenzione. Io "adoro" la Warner. Alcuni dei miei migliori amici sono nella Warner Brothers. E' perfino possibile che io stia commettendo un'ingiustizia nei vostri confronti e che voi, poverini, siate estranei a questo comportamento da botoli ringhiosi. Non mi sorprenderebbe affatto scoprire che i capi del vostro ufficio legale sono all'oscuro di quest'assurda diatriba, giacché io sono in buoni rapporti con molti di loro e si tratta di brave persone con i ricci neri, i completi doppiopetto e un amore per il prossimo che è più saroyaniano di Saroyan. Ho la sensazione che questo tentativo di impedirci di usare il titolo sia stato partorito dalla mente di qualche azzeccagarbugli dal musetto aguzzo, che sta svolgendo un breve apprendistato nel vostro ufficio legale. Lo conosco bene, quel genere: fresco fresco di università, affamato di successo e troppo ambizioso per seguire le naturali leggi della promozione. Questo scellerato causomane ha probabilmente istigato i vostri avvocati (che sono perlopiù brave persone con i ricci neri, i completi doppiopetto, eccetera) a tentare la diffida. Ebbene, non la passerà liscia! Gli daremo battaglia fino all'ultimo appello! Nessun esangue avventuriero legale riuscirà a spargere zizzania fra i Warner e i Marx. Storia Di Musica #266 - Dead Can Dance, Aion, 1990

La copertina del disco di oggi, della serie di lavori che riprendono capolavori del Rinascimento, è un particolare de Il Trittico Del Giardino Delle Delizie di  Hieronymus Bosch, dipinto probabilmente tra il 1490 e il 1510 dal maestro nederlandese, conservato oggi al Museo Del Prado di Madrid. Il particolare è della sezione centrale, sulla Vita nel Giardino. A sceglierlo per quello che è il loro disco capolavoro sono stati un gruppo australiano, i Dead Can Dance. Si formano a Melbourne alla fine degli anni ‘70, e si ispirano alla new wave britannica di quei giorni e alle sonorità post-punk. Sono in quattro all’inizio: Paul Erikson al basso, Lisa Gerrard alla voce, Simon Monroe alla chitarra e alla batteria e Brendan Perry alla voce e alla seconda chitarra. Pubblicano un singolo, nell’agosto del 1981, The Fatal Impact, che esce in una compilation di una rivista specializzata, Fast Forward. Visto il successo scarso, decidono di andare a Londra. Passano mesi duri, fino a quando nel 1983 un loro demo arriva alla  4AD Records, un’etichetta indipendente  fondata nel 1979 da Ivo Watts-Russell e Peter Kent e che sarà fucina di talenti e del più sofisticato goth rock di quel periodo, avendo scoperto e prodotto  Bauhaus, Cocteau Twins, Modern English, Pixies, Throwing Muses, e i leggendari This Mortal Coil, una sorta di supergruppo con molti dei musicisti delle band dell’etichetta che pubblicherà tre dischi magnifici. I Dead Can Dance sostituiscono Monroe con Peter Ulrich e nel 1984 pubblicano Dead Can Dance: in copertina, una maschera rituale della Nuova Guinea con il nome in caratteri greci del nome della band, una musica che se parte dall’elettronica new wave si espande e diventa rarefatta, acquisendo dettagli e costruzioni che diventeranno iconici, soprattutto grazie alla voce magnetica di Lisa Gerrard. Partecipano al progetto This Mortal Coil, poi nel 1985 il primo disco notevole, Spleen And Ideal, in cui introducono archi, fiati, armonie che si rifanno alla musica gotica, contenuti mistici che troppo velocemente diventano “new age”, e da qui inizia un piccolo seguito di culto per la band, che è diventata ormai un duo Gerrard\Perry, compagni anche nella vita. Si trasferiscono in Irlanda, e lì compongono il primo capolavoro: The Serpent’s Egg (1988) è ancora più etereo e sognante, e un brano, The Host Of Seraphim, verrà usato a più riprese in documentari, trailer, altri brani addirittura campionati (The Chemical Brothers che usano un sample di Song Of Sophia per la loro Song To The Siren, nel loro disco Exit Planet Dust del 1995). Succede però che i due si separino come coppia, con la Gerrard che rimane in Irlanda e inizia a studiare le lingue slave, Perry che va in Spagna. Ma il loro binomio artistico continua, e le esperienze personali sono alla base del disco di oggi, il loro capolavoro. Lo intitolano Aion, una parola greca che vuol dire “forza vitale”, e nella mitologia greca è il tempo infinito, del susseguirsi delle ere, ma anche il tempo vitale e il destino a differenza di Chronos che è il Dio del tempo degli eventi, delle ritualità. Composto da 12 brani spettacolari, ha decine di influenze. Solo due brani sono in inglese, Black Sun e Fortune Presents Gifts Not According To The Book, il cui testo è una traduzione di alcune liriche del poeta spagnolo barocco del diciassettesimo secolo Luis de Góngora. Si aggiungono melodie medioevali e rinascimentali, strumenti antichi come la ghironda o la viola da gamba, sono capaci di creare una musica che sembra un gioco di aria e acqua nella breve ma stupenda The Garden Of Zephirus, polifonie vocali nella toccante Wilderness, i ritmi da mercato arabo della conclusiva Radharc, la ripresa di un Saltarello, una melodia tipica del Centro Italia Rinascimentale, ma su tutto domina la voce, da brividi, della Gerrard, che con naturalezza canta una glossolalia fatta di parole greche, latine, arabe, bulgare, gaeliche che sembrano una misteriosa nuova lingua nella spettacolare apertura del disco, The Arrival And The Reunion, accompagnata dal soprano maschile David Navarro Sust. Alcuni strumentali sono eccezionali e rimandano al tempo del dipinto di copertina, come Mephisto e la stupenda As The Bell Rings The Maypole Spins (il Maypole Spin è molto simile All’Intreccio delle tradizioni folkoristiche nostrale legate al Carnevale, e consiste nell’intrecciare serie di nastri colorati, seguendo un ballo ritmico, ad un palo). Ma il colpo da maestro è la ripresa di una canzone tradizionale mediterranea, The Song Of The Sybil, conosciuta soprattutto nel sud della Spagna come El Canto De La Sibilla e ad Alghero: canzone di genere apocalittico che la tradizione fa risalire addirittura a Eusebio da Cesarea, che scrisse, secondo Sant’Agostino, una Iudicii Signum, che il teologo da Ippona tradusse dal greco al latino nella sua Città Di Dio. I Dead Can Dance ne riprendono la versione in catalano, che è uno dei momenti clou delle celebrazioni della natività in molte zone della Spagna: qui la Gerrad sfoggia tutta la natura dolorosa del canto, in una prova vocale da brividi e indimenticabile. Il disco è acclamato dalla critica e rimane uno dei picchi di creatività di una band che toccherà il massimo successo con Into The Labyrinth (1993), che venderà 500 mila copie, record per un disco della 4AD. Rimangono un ascolto necessario, per la delicatezza delle scelte e la magia della loro musica, da assaporare con il tempo necessario per un viaggio spazio temporale, almeno ad occhi chiusi.

“Viento”-Caifanes — Cordelia/Gale (bg3) just the astral imagery and wanting time to slow down for a moment. This song is when they’re both unsure about the future outcome, but want to exist together in their little bubble for a little longer.

“Eres”- Cafe Tacvba — another Cordelia/Gale from Gale’s perspective. Just the utter devotion is very Gale to me. He devotes his body, mind, and soul, and wants that energy returned. That like. Mutual devotion to each other. The lines “[you are] my salvation, my hope, and my faith” gets to me.

“sisko älä pelkää”- pehmoaino — not a romantic ship, but this does make me think of Cordelia & Wyll platonic friendship. In Cordelia’s canon, they were best friends since childhood. The events of the game really fracture their relationship, and they feel this growing distance where they used to be so close.

“Dos galaxias”- Indios — another Cordelia & Wyll straining friendship. Just confused and hurt because what happened? They used to be so close. Cordelia who sees him like a brother, so why is he now so far away that they might as well be two galaxies.

“Dime Como Tú Quieras”- Los Mesoneros — haven’t talked about this pairing to anyone except maybe 2 people, but Ever/Aria T’Loak (Mass Effect 2) this is We-both-need-a-distraction-from-our-exes, no-we-won’t-talk-about-it sex

“Antes de Ti”- Diamante Eléctrico - Ever/James when they get together post-canon. Just Ever’s bad reputation with relationships just turning to ash, because they want so much of what used to scare them (real intimacy). All the sugary sweet romantic things they used to avoid, they now seek (and enjoy) from him.

“Between Two Points (feat. Swan)”- The Glitch Mob, Swan — Cordelia/Gale. It’s a little horny, but also a little dark because the weight of what they must do is so heavy. She projects confidence to ease everyone else’s anxieties (seeing her so self-assured inspires), but they very much don’t know what will happen. These two are so thirsty for each other

“Hug”- SEVENTEEN — Cordelia/Gale. Specifically this is Gale comforting Cordelia after she sacrifices her magic. They love each other so much T-T

I have few blorbos guys sorry! And some of my favorite blorbo pairings are with other friend’s OCs, so I’m really struggling to find a last song.

“Try to be”- Blue Hawaii —So while not a ship song, I’ll share this song that’s kinda like a character study? I think it really captures some of the struggles that Ever has with their mother. Never living up to her expectations, realizing that they don’t want to even try to, anymore.

A Summer Setting for a Summer Read

A friend sent me a twitter thread asking about books set in summer and I thought...what a fantastic post that could be. We often talk about "summer reads" but what about books that are set during summer? Books that capture that magical time of "freedom" and beating the heat. A time when anything seems possible.  Take a look at these books that have mysteries to solve, new relationships to explore, and lives forever changed.

Warrior Girl Unearthed by Angeline Boulley

Perry Firekeeper-Birch was ready for her Summer of Slack but instead, after a fender bender that was entirely not her fault, she’s stuck working to pay back her Auntie Daunis for repairs to the Jeep.

Thankfully she has the other outcasts of the summer program, Team Misfit Toys, and even her twin sister Pauline. Together they ace obstacle courses, plan vigils for missing women in the community, and make sure summer doesn’t feel so lost after all.

But when she attends a meeting at a local university, Perry learns about the “Warrior Girl”, an ancestor whose bones and knife are stored in the museum archives, and everything changes. Perry has to return Warrior Girl to her tribe. Determined to help, she learns all she can about NAGPRA, the federal law that allows tribes to request the return of ancestral remains and sacred items. The university has been using legal loopholes to hold onto Warrior Girl and twelve other Anishinaabe ancestors’ remains, and Perry and the Misfits won’t let it go on any longer.

Using all of their skills and resources, the Misfits realize a heist is the only way to bring back the stolen artifacts and remains for good. But there is more to this repatriation than meets the eye as more women disappear and Pauline’s perfectionism takes a turn for the worse. As secrets and mysteries unfurl, Perry and the Misfits must fight to find a way to make things right – for the ancestors and for their community.

Aria Tang West was looking forward to a summer on Martha's Vineyard with her best friends--one last round of sand and sun before college. Help Me Understand

Austin wants answers to his questions about love whether or not Aria's ready face her own answers.

Heavy footfalls, the forceful opening of a door, and the sudden blinding flash of artificial light after steady nighttime darkness bring Aria out of her sleepy time.

“Aria I need to ask you something,” Austin says formally announcing his presence only to be met with a sleepy and annoyed groan.

"Austin, not that I'm mad but why are you in my room at 3 in the morning?" At her response, he turns to look at the digital clock on her bedside, long enough to register the blinking numbers.

“... Should I come back later?” Aria sits up in bed making sure her pajamas, consisting of a thin tank and comfy pajama bottoms, covered everything. Not that she thinks Austin would give it much notice.

"No no, if I don't answer your question you'll just pace up and down the place keeping me up anyway." She says motioning him to sit down, expecting him to sit near the foot of the bed only to fluster when he sits down only a foot or two away from her. She clears her throat, composing herself before continuing “So what did you want to ask me?”

“I need you to explain what it means to love someone.” Less of a question, more like a demand said in the same factoid way of speech he has when intaking information.

"... Huh,” she uttered, wondering if it was too late to send him away. “Listen, love can mean different things to different people so I can't guarantee that it'll be the same to other people," Aria tells him, not very keen on having this conversation at all.

"Well, what does it mean to you?" Austin’s counter-question gave Aria pause, she had to turn away from him as she really thought about it. She had put the need to prepare for this moment on the backburner, both to keep a level head in the midst of the battle for the future and because she didn’t actually know how to describe love.

To Aria, love was once a cozy woodside cabin with a grandmother who smelled like lilac and taught her how to make paper flowers. Or an apartment with her mom who would bring home her favorite food from the diner she worked at. And her aunt Ginger who once had a bright smile and a contagious laugh, reserved for moments like when she tried to teach Aria how to use makeup to comically bad results. Nowadays, love came in the form of a mother who could be as cold and strict as gunmetal and just as unrelenting. Love also came in the form of her little brother with impish smiles and big hazel eyes that always betrayed his thoughts and emotions in a way only she was ever around to read. Her brother, who she was tasked to guard from the first moment her mother felt him kick and who she seriously vowed to protect when he first held her finger in his little baby fists.

“I think love means to care about someone enough to put their happiness and well-being over your own. Because when you see them smile and hear them laugh, you want nothing more than to make sure that they can keep it no matter what it takes…even if the means hurt you in the process.” When she was done talking she turned back to Austin, in time to see his gaze shift from her to just over her shoulder, Aria could tell he wasn't looking at anything in particular and was taking a moment to analyze her response both the intended verbal answer and the unintentional physical reaction she had to the question. It unnerved her how well Austin could read her and it’s with those same nerves that she asks her next question.

"Austin,” at the sound of Aria’s voice Austin focused his eyes back on hers, “we've been around each other for a few weeks now so why did you wait so long to ask."

"I needed time to process. I needed to know if these new… feelings would correspond with your explanation." He explains, simple words ladened with not so simple meanings.

"And?" Austin gave an uncharacteristic and unsure shrug. A very human gesture of cluelessness, too human for either’s comfort. "... What do you know, Austin?" Aria's voice seemed to startle her for a second as if she hadn't meant to say it out loud before she schooled her features back down to a neutral farce. She knew she had just asked a dangerous question but she needed to know his answer, for her own sake.

Austin shifted closer to Aria on the bed to the point he could faintly hear her heart beating at a quickened pace. He made sure to keep eye contact with her as he gave his answer.

"I know that I look for you when you're not around. I know that when you are, I can’t bring myself to be far from you. I know I've memorized everything from your appearance to your speech pattern. But that doesn't stop me from wanting to hear more of your voice. Doesn't stop me from wanting to… see more of you." His eyes flick down for the briefest moment and Aria's tank top suddenly felt way too heavy and way too thick.

“I know all these wants confuse and alarm me in a way I hadn’t been able to describe.” There was a ‘till now’ that went unsaid, but both knew it was insinuated.

“And most of all,” he says as he leans in even closer till their faces were inches apart, “I want to know what you know, Aria.” He says as his eyes roam her face searching for something Aria’s not sure she wants him finding. Apparently, he doesn't find it and he lets a small, almost sad, smile fall upon his lips.

“But I know that’s not gonna happen anytime soon,” he said as he leaned back still holding Aria’s attention captive, “So, for now, I’ll leave you to rest. Goodnight Aria.” And as swiftly as he entered, he left, turning off the lights and closing the door behind him. The only evidence that he had been there was the ragged breath Aria let out, after unconsciously holding it in. Despite Austin’s words and the early hour she knew she definitely wasn’t getting any more sleep tonight.

Squad A Au

Do you think squad A could have completed the mission.

It's an AU. Blackguard never betrayed the team so Amanda didn't make them into a scrape goat and they made it past the beach. There's no squad B which could also mean that Amanda placed Peacemaker on this team or one of the original members is her inside man.

Everything I'm about to say is a mix based on the movie(s?), A quick search through wikis, and just what I think would make for a good story/movie.

The Lineup

Harley and Rick have both proven themselves as very smart and capable people so I'm going to focus on the others.

Mongal: This is someone that went head to head with Superman AND LIVED she definitely should not have died via fire. She has super strength, super speed, and invulnerability. She's also an alien warrior so she knows how to fight. In the comics she has an energy chest cannon and since her costume has the same design feature imma go ahead and give her that.

T.D.K: He's definitely Arm-Fall-Off-Boy/Splitter so I'm going to have to be very generous with him. Wiki says that his arms cannot reattach, they instead can regrow within minutes, and in the comics he's shown to regularly use them as blunt weapons. What does this mean? It means that no matter what happened to his arms once they detach they should not have any affect on his main body at all. The movies make it clear he has telekinetic control over them and while, yes, only 2 arms attacking you is kind of pathetic a good dozen, however, is nightmare fuel. He's also 1 of 2 members of the team that started off as a hero. In fact as far as I can tell he was never a villain in any of his comic appearances.

Savant: The other member that started off on the right side of the track. Well, he was a pretty violent vigilante so maybe middle of the road is a more apt term. His on screen persona seems to be much older than his comic counterpart so it's safe to say he's been doing villainy for a while now. By far the smartest member of the team, despite being an expert marksman his most dangerous ability is his hacking. Which he used as a villain to blackmail and extort others.

Blackguard: He's an idiot but he's an idiot you'd want in your corner during a fight. His suit grants him ergokinesis, control of energy, which he uses to construct weapons such as shields, maces, and whips. Considering he's also an expert marksman it's not an impossibility that he could make energy bullets either. Wiki states he's got superhuman strength, idk if that's all him or if it comes from the suit. Either way he's got it.

Javelin: He is an Olympic athlete who, as far as I can tell, turned to villainy just for the hell of it. I already said I think his weapon is magic, what I didn't mention was that I think his javelin is an all-in-oner. Everything his specially engineered javelins could do in the comics his magic javelin can do in the movie. Smoke screen, explosions, etc. The reason Harley couldn't do that is because only he knows all the secrets of the magic javelin.

Captain Boomerang: This is the man that knocked out The Flash with a boomerang and tied him to a rocket boomerang. I don't know if these were on the same day but the fact remains he did it. Weasel: He has killed 27 children before so there's obviously some bloodlust that the team could possibly weaponize, but then again they were children so there's no knowing how good he can actually fight, and then again again he's a weasel and they can be mean mfs. Basically, jury's out on this one.

The Dynamics

Sometimes a family is an exasperated father (Savant), his 6 kids and their murderous pet weasel that's still alive somehow.

Blackguard would definitely be the little brother that T.D.K, Harley, and Boomerang like to mess with. He'd try to go to Rick or Savant to get them to stop. He'd learn pretty quickly Ricks the only one who'll actually try to help.

Javelin flirts with everyone (bar weasel) at least once. Mongal threatened to stick his javelin where the sun don't shine. T.D.K is described as being mischievous and fun loving so there's a good chance he flirted back. Savant glared at him menacingly until he apologized and backed away. Blackguard, the poor idiot, couldn't tell he was being hit on so it just made the exchange funny/awkward for all involved. Boomerang definitely flirted back with a sexual innuendo about his own "javelin".

When the truth comes out I can see T.D.K immediately siding with Rick. Savant would need a bit more convincing, like say the death/threat of death of one of his kids teammates.

Idk if I want Weasel to "die" on the beach only for him to come back later as a joke/dues ex machina. Or for him to try and eat/attack his teammates like Nanaue did but because they can't reason with him it just goes "No, bad Weasel. Bad Weasel." *Spray bottle*.

Richard Tauber Programme with Gwen Catley

Gwen Catley - coloratura soprano

Gwen Catley was once known in Britain as the "highest voice in the land". Standing only 4'11" tall, she had a high and accurate coloratura voice, with often a very lovely poise of delivery. She was a natural. She came from a family of serious musical amateurs, and as a child always sang around the house. At two and a half, she joined in a concert performance of Oh! For the Wings of a Dove.

She received no teaching until she began attending the Guildhall at the age of sixteen for twenty-minute lessons on a Saturday morning. She first worked on the Air du Rossignol by Saint-Saëns. Her professor took her to the Principal Sir Landon Ronald (who had been accompanist to Patti and Melba). Sir Landon said "she reminds me of Melba – bring her back in a year's time."

At that time a Gold Medal was awarded every year to the student who was thought would make an impression in the profession. Catley was to get the Medal, but her father argued with Ronald, saying he wouldn't have any daughter of his enter such a profession. So the Medal was withdrawn.

A year later she became engaged. On telling the good news to Landon Ronald, he asked, "to whom?" She replied, "a cellist". He said, "Oh, they never have any money – you'll have to sing. You'd better have the Gold Medal after all". Sir Landon Ronald then sponsored her debut at the Wigmore Hall, which had to open its gallery to accommodate the crowd. Her first half was a mixture of early Italian, French and German songs, and the second half consisted of operatic arias. She received work in musicals, the radio and Sadler's Wells Opera, where she was to be a Queen of the Night, Nanetta and Gilda. At the time of singing Gilda, she weighed a mere 6 stone 5 lbs.

During the war, she was on the stage in London a good deal, and appeared on such radio shows as the Richard Tauber Hour and Friday Night is Seaside Night. She was requested to appear on Children's Hour. Sir Walford Davies (then Master of the King's Musick) was one of its organisers and, dispensing with small talk, he greeted her with "I hear you haven't got a wobble!"

Her voice was not large, but in the right circumstances she could be heard to good effect in the theatre. She was a good judge of these circumstances. She reported turning down Queen of the Night at Covent Garden on the grounds that in their productions the Queen would in all likelihood be two-thirds of the way towards the back of the stage. She did however try to get into Glyndebourne. Her agents Ibbs & Tillett sent her there to audition. She got as far as the Chorus Master, who said, "If you come for some singing lessons with me, I might get you into the chorus."

She did not enjoy oratorio particularly, and said she simply did not like the Messiah aria "I know that my redeemer liveth". She chose her radio work with some care too. In the interval of a Proms performance of hers in 1947, Kenneth Horne came to her on bended knee. He asked her to perform in his radio show Much Binding in the Marsh. She took a singing part as the "vet's niece", but left after six shows, as the music and scripts arrived only on the day, and she did not feel it was for her voice.

Much of her radio, and then TV, work was conducted by one or other of the Robinson brothers. Eric Robinson conducted an opening programme on TV with Margot Fonteyn dancing, Campoli playing the violin, and Norman Wisdom and her singing.

Stanford Robinson, a pillar at the BBC for 47 years, conducted many of her recordings. He was known for being cruel to some singers. "What are you trying to do there?" he asked as she did a downward portamento of an octave. "I'm not trying to do anything," she replied, "this is what I am doing."

In her concerts around the country, people always asked for Bishop's Lo! Here the Gentle Lark. This of course required a flautist, whom the local organisers would have to find. Far too often, she said, all you would hear from the flautist was "spit & blow". Her repertoire did include some more modern opera, and she took part in the first British broadcast of Stravinsky's Rake's Progress.

She suddenly retired when she said her voice no longer sounded right to her. She went to Italy for twenty years. When back in England, she began to teach. She taught Judi Dench to sing in Cabaret, after "going down and down to find the right key".

Gwen Catley's comments on present-day singers in 1995 (when she was 85 years old) were: "Today I don't hear the words, neither their ends nor their beginnings".
